Documents Required

Complete, up-to-date checklists for every route — same-day court marriage, the Special Marriage Act, registration of an existing marriage, and NRI cases.

Most delays at the Registrar’s counter come from one missing paper. Use the checklists below to prepare, and send us soft copies in advance so we can verify everything before your appointment.

A. Same-day court marriage — Hindu Marriage Act, 1955

  • Date-of-birth proof of both parties — matriculation certificate, passport, birth certificate or driving licence.
  • Aadhaar card and Voter ID of the bride and the groom.
  • Separate affidavits from bride and groom stating date of birth, marital status and nationality (drafted by our office).
  • Ten to twelve passport-size photographs of each party.
  • Two witnesses with their Aadhaar, PAN and four passport-size photographs each.
  • Declaration that the parties are not within the prohibited degree of relationship.
  • Decree of divorce (if divorced) or death certificate of the previous spouse (if widowed).
  • For an Arya Samaj ceremony: two garlands, sweets and desi ghee for the havan.
  • If either party is a foreign national: NOC / marital status certificate from the concerned embassy.

B. Court marriage — Special Marriage Act, 1954

  • Date-of-birth proof of both parties (matriculation certificate, passport or birth certificate).
  • Aadhaar card and Voter ID of both parties.
  • Separate affidavits stating date of birth, marital status and nationality (drafted by our office).
  • Four to six passport-size photographs of each party.
  • Three witnesses with Aadhaar, PAN and photographs.
  • Residence proof of at least one party in the district where the notice is filed (rent agreement, electricity bill, Aadhaar).
  • Declaration that the parties are not within the prohibited degree of relationship.
  • Decree of divorce or death certificate of previous spouse, where applicable.
  • Passport, visa and embassy NOC where one party is a foreign national.

C. Registration of an existing marriage

  • Completed application form signed by both spouses.
  • Date-of-birth and identity proof of both spouses.
  • Proof that the marriage took place — invitation card, photographs or the religious certificate.
  • Joint affidavit stating the date and place of marriage and the marital status of both spouses.
  • Address proof of both spouses.
  • Two witnesses who attended the wedding, with Aadhaar, PAN and photographs.
  • One joint photograph of the couple from the wedding ceremony.

D. Where one party is a foreign national or NRI

  • Valid passport with a subsisting visa (a tourist visa may be insufficient in some offices — check with us first).
  • No-objection or marital status certificate from the embassy or high commission in New Delhi.
  • Proof of stay in India for the required residence period — hotel or landlord certificate, or an FRRO registration.
  • Documents issued abroad may need apostille or attestation by the Indian Mission in that country.
  • Certified English translation of any document not in English or Hindi.
